W11 EXCESSIVE EXHAUST FUMES

Engines: 2.0 16V, 2.0 JTD 8V, 2.3 JTD 16V, 2.8 JTD 8V
Engines: 2.3 JTD 16V
High exhaust fume levels are noted, with dense fumes and more particulate that specified
Engines: 2.3 JTD 16V
STEPOPERATIONS TO BE CARRIED OUTTEST RESULTS
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check engine oil level.Check air filter conditionsMove on to Step1. Excessive oil level1. Restore correct oil level
2. Filter element dirty or damaged2. Replace the filter element Op. 1048A14 AIR CLEANER FILTERING ELEMENT - REPLACE.
1CHECK USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Connect the diagnostic test equipment (Examiner or other instruments) to the tester input.Check:
  • That there are no faults in the engine management control unit;
  • The plausibility of all the parameters
Move on to Step1. Error detected in the control unit1. Continue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
2. No communication with the control unit2. Restore the connection between the engine management control unit and the diagnostic connector See E5050 DIESEL ENGINES ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT
2BLOW-BY CIRCUIT CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check the condition of the blow-by gas intake circuit. In particular, check for obstructions in the separator or pipesMove on to Step1. Fault detected in the pipe from intake to separator1. Restore circuit to working order: change the pipe if necessary
2. Fault detected in the pipe from separator to intake2. Restore circuit to working order: change the pipe if necessary
3. Fault detected in the recovery pipe3. Restore circuit to working order: change the pipe if necessary
4. Fault in the separator4. Replace the separator
3AIR CIRCUIT CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check the condition and seal of the air intake circuit: in particular, check for oil in the pipesMove on to Step1. Circuit component damaged1. Replace the damaged component
2. Oil in the intake pipes2. Clean the pipes (check source of oil)
4EGR VALVE OPERATION CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check EGR valve operationMove on to StepValve operating faultReplace EGR valve
5CYLINDER COMPRESSION CHECKALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Carry out cylinder compression checkMove on to StepCylinder compression insufficientMove on to Step
6CHECK ON CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSIONALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
  • R/R head for valve leakage test
  • Check condition of cylinders/piston rings
Move on to Step1. Valve seal insufficient1. Overhaul the head Op. 1016E10 SINGLE CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVED - OVERHAUL
2. Cylinder/ring wear outside tolerances2. Restore correct operating clearance
7CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONALL OKPROBLEMS ENCOUNTEREDACTION
Check that the fault is no longer present
